Guides › Net run rate

How net run rate (NRR) is calculated

When two teams finish level on points, net run rate decides who goes through. It measures how quickly a team scored compared with how quickly its opponents scored against it, across all its matches in the tournament.

The formula

NRR = (total runs scored ÷ total overs faced) − (total runs conceded ÷ total overs bowled)

In other words: your team's run rate with the bat, minus the run rate you allowed with the ball. A positive NRR means you score faster than you concede.

Step 1: convert overs into decimals

Overs are written as overs.balls, so 16.4 means 16 overs and 4 balls, not 16.4 overs. Before dividing, turn the balls into a fraction of an over (one over is 6 balls):

The easiest way is to count balls: 16.4 overs is 100 balls, and run rate = runs × 6 ÷ balls.

Step 2: add up every match

NRR is not an average of each match's NRR. You add all runs and all overs across the tournament first, then divide once.

Worked example

Rising Stars have played two matches:

Totals: scored 270 runs in 38.5 overs (231 balls); conceded 258 runs in 40 overs (240 balls).
